Toxic... I like it better as a song.

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

We all love the legendary toxic song by the fabulous Britney Spears its iconic. But I rather have it as a song then in my body or home. Toxic chemicals can be bad for our bodies without us knowing; They affect people with asthma and respiratory problems, a hormone disrupter, cause headaches, and so much more. While doing research I came up with a list of items that might be in your home that can be toxic to you and your family.

Toxic things that can be in your house:

1. BLEACH: Bleach can be an essential product for your everyday cleaning but it’s time to end that toxic relationship. Bleach is a known to cause asthma and lung stiffness. The toxic fumes are just not safe for your body. Instead use white distilled vinegar and or lemon essential oils.

2. FRAGRANCES: It is so important to not buy anything with fragrance in the ingredients because it is an “umbrella” term. The U.S. can hide so many chemicals in the word fragrance so we really don’t know what’s truly in it. It can cause allergic reactions and be a hormone disrupter.

3. ANTI BACTERIAL CHEMICALS: Antibacterial chemicals found in soaps, cleaners and tooth paste are definitely toxic. These products can cause a hormone imbalance and thyroid issues. Instead use castile soap, all natural tooth paste and hand soaps.

4. CANDLES and FRESHENERS: This makes me sad because I do adore my candles but they are in fact toxic. Air fresheners and candles are linked to so many different things like migraines, allergic reactions, kidney damage and more. Instead use beeswax candle, essential oils, white distilled vinegar, and baking soda.

5. DRYER SHEETS: Dryer sheets can be so toxic; they don’t have an ingredients list but hold so many chemicals to help dry your close faster. The chemicals get in your clothes and onto your skin. Instead use wool dryer balls for your laundry and plus they’re eco-friendly.

6. NON-STICK PANS: I know we all love this because it is so easy while we are cooking but sadly it is toxic. Non-stick pans are hormone disrupters and have many other effects on our body. Instead use stainless steel pots and pans or cast iron.

7. FLAME RETARDENTS: Flame retardants are so toxic and are supposed to help us. Flame retardants are linked to nerve damage and brain damage, and are found in mattresses, car seats, cushions, and more. Instead find organic mattresses with no chemicals or flame retardants. When shopping for things makes sure it has no flame retardant chemicals till benefit you in the long run.

I have been on this journey of toxic free household and lifestyle since mid-January and I am still learning every day. I am doing lots of research reading books, watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, and so much more. When I was first starting to see what products of mine I was totally shocked that even my more “natural” brands were just as toxic as regular cleaning products. Just because it says natural doesn’t always mean all natural! It doesn’t have to be perfect or do I want you to get rid of everything at once, just take day by day and when you run out of something go the toxic free route. Just be more aware and cautious.
